PAL to retrench 35% of its workforce

CITING heavy losses incurred for the last six months due to government restrictions in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country’s flag carrier Philippine Airlines is set to retrench one-third of its workforce effective October this year.

The impending retrenchment, the second this year, is part of the country’s biggest airline company’s mitigating measures that would keep their business afloat.

In a statement, PAL said they are compelled to come up with measures that would allow them to continue operating, and among those measures is to trim down the number of their employees.

Since March this year, PAL has not been able to deploy its airplanes since the government issued restrictions on both international and domestic flights amid the pandemic scare.

They are nevertheless giving their employees an option – extended leaves or retrenchment.

The retrenchment of their workforce would be the second this year.
