MMDA replaces concrete barriers with steel bollards

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has started to remove the concrete barriers from EDSA amid the risk it poses following numerous accidents it caused.

With concrete barriers being stripped from the national highway, MMDA began replacing them with steel bollards.

The concrete barriers used to separate the EDSA bus-way lane from the other lanes were found to have somehow caused many of road mishaps, as shown on viral video.

MMDA traffic chief Bong Nebrija claims the use of some 6,000 bollards is part of the road diet for EDSA – including underpasses and overpasses, to maximize the space allotted for buses, private vehicles and bikes.

The 6,000 bollards that have replaced concrete barriers is just a tip of the iceberg as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said last month it has procured 36,000 concrete barriers to put up a dedicated lane for buses on EDSA.

There was no word as to what the government plans to do with the concrete barriers which was procured to the tune of P4,300 each.
