Former Comelec chief passes away

EIGHTY-year old former Commission on Elections chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. passed away on Tuesday morning, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez confirmed.

“This is to confirm the passing of former Chairperson Sixto S. Brillantes Jr., today at a little past 11a.m.,” Jimenez said in a message to reporters.

He said Comelec will issue an official statement letter on the death of the former Comelec chief, who was earlier reported to have been tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Brillantes’ former staff Emil Marañon also posted about the death of his former boss on Twitter.

A veteran election lawyer, Brillantes served as Comelec chair from 2011 to 2015.
