Filipino-Canadian singer Darren Espanto broke his silence anew on rumors that he is gay.
Appearing on the vlog of his friend Kyle Echarri, Espanto said: “I would like them to know that I am straight. I’ve addressed this before.”
Espanto. 19, rose to fame when he placed second to Lyka Gainarod during the inaugural season of The Voice Kids Philippines in 2014.
Now based in Canada because of the pandemic, Espanto said that he is always being bashed for his sexuality.
Espanto said that he simply ignores those nasty rumors.
“I just don’t mind them. Sa industriyang ginagalawan natin, we’ll gonna run into people like that, especially bashers. Kasama iyon sa mundo ng showbiz. I personally don’t mind them,” he said. “Wala naman silang ibang magandang ginagawa sa buhay tulad sa akin. Who cares about them?”
Espanto said that the gay issue surfaced when he sang song for girls during his stint in the Voice Kids.
“The bashing started when I sang songs for girls like I have a high voice. They always assume my sexual preference. I would like them to know that I am straight. Parang wala na silang ibang mahanap. Pag bored sila, sasabihin nila ‘ah bakla yan,’ “ he said.
Espanto said that some of his showbiz friends describe him as super nice. “People say na masyado raw ako mabait. So now, I don’t know. Being nice could be good and bad.”
While he loves to sing and dance, Espanto hopes that he will appear in many movies soon. “I have done one movie and I hope to make more movies.”
