THE much awaited completion of the P10-billion Skyway Extension project may not take place as scheduled following an accident which resulted in the death of one and injuring four others.
In a statement, Skyway Extension contractor EEI Corp said that a crane that was being positioned for its next task tilted and fell on the girder spanning the two posts of the north-bound Skyway extension project.
“The girder fell on vehicles below, killing at least one and injuring at least four persons who were rushed by ambulances from the Skyway O&M Corp. and EEI to various hospitals,” EEI said.
Due to the incident, San Miguel Corporation (SMC), the concession holder of Metro Manila Skyway through its San Miguel Infrastructure, said after its initial assessment, “this unfortunate incident sets back the completion of the Skyway Extension project.”
“From the December 2020 deadline, target completion is now February 2021,” SMC said.
The project is seen as key to reducing traffic in southern Metro Manila, particularly the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx) and the Alabang area while allowing motorists from the south direct access to the elevated Skyway and beyond.
“We deeply regret this unfortunate accident and assure a full and thorough investigation. Our thoughts and concern are with the victims and we will make sure they will get all the help they need. Their welfare is our priority,” SMC said.
