Search for new PNP chief now down to three

By Fernan Angeles

THE search for the next national police chief has become a three-cornered tussle, said the Department of Interior and Local Government which issued a statement confirming the submission of the three names to President Rodrigo Duterte.

DILG spokesperson Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya, however, declined to reveal the names of the police officials and their ranks.

But even with three names already submitted to Malacañang, President has the option to appoint somebody else other than those three – or choose to extend Gamboa’s term.

“The President may choose from the list or he has also the discretion to appoint anyone from all the generals of the PNP,” Malaya said.

PNP chief Archie Gamboa, who belongs to the Philippine Military Academy “Sinagtala” Class of 1986, is set to retire on September 2.
