MANILA — Why did the ostrich cross the road? And what misfortune befell its missing companion?

These questions have vexed Filipinos for the past week, offering a mental break from more-prosaic concerns such as mounting coronavirus cases and a government crackdown on dissent.

The tale of the two birds begins in Quezon City, part of Metro Manila. But — spoiler alert — it doesn’t end well for one ostrich, nor for one of the birds’ handlers.
